Choosing Between Gas and Electric Fireplaces to Heat Your Home
These days, there has been an influx of gas and electric fireplaces in the market as newer innovations and technology is introduced in the industry. The conventional fireplaces are slowly becoming a thing of the past. There are many people who wonder whether they’ll go for a gas or an electric fireplace. Both have their own costs and benefits to the environment and it’s really up to homeowners which to choose depending on their intended use.
The problem of having smoke from wood fire has been eliminated by both gas and electric fireplaces. With gas fireplaces though, ventilation is still necessary since carbon monoxide is emitted from natural gas combustion. Natural gas produces heat more effectively and efficiently than its electric counterpart. So less energy is being consumed to obtain a required heat when you use gas fireplaces. If your home however does not require much heat, gas fireplaces are not practical since combustion is needed to produce the effect of flame.
Electric fireplaces on the other hand independently operate the heat and flame effects. Electric fireplaces are practically space heaters that are intended to make the illusion of a burning fire. Because the heat and flame effects are independently produced, people can just activate the ability to have flickering fire for ambience and this won’t consume much energy. Its heat producing function is the one that consumes more energy. Even though electric fireplaces don’t produce any emissions, the electricity that is used to power them comes from power plants that run on coal-burning or natural gas.
So in the end, both gas and electric fireplaces have their own pros and cons and it is really up to the homeowner how they would like to use their fireplace. If you are looking for supplemental heat for your home, a gas fireplace is more economical. If you’d want to have the warm ambience brought about by a fireplace, electric will suit you more.
